STUDENT EXPECTED BEHAVIOR:

Edgemont has created a behavior matrix that explains student expected behavior in all school locations.  The behavior matrix is located on the last page of this handbook.

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE:

Students should not arrive at school before 9:45 a.m. on Mondays (late start day).
Students should not arrive at school before 8:45 a.m. on Tuesdays – Fridays.
There is no supervision on the playground before these times.  Students are asked to clear the playground after school and check in at home before returning to the playground to play.

BICYCLES:

Students riding bikes to school should walk their bikes as soon as they are on school property.  Bike racks are available on the playground area.  Students are encouraged to wear helmets and to use locks on their bikes.

CELL PHONES & ELECTRONICS BROUGHT FROM HOME:

It has been increasingly common for parents to send cell phones to school with their students as a safety measure.  This allows parents the ability to communicate with their child if the need arises.  If a
student brings a cell phone to school, the phone is not to be used during the school hours and is to remain turned off.  Parents always have the ability to contact their student through the school phone.  Students can still utilize the school phone during school hours to call parents if an emergency arises.  The school assumes no responsibility for lost, damaged, or stolen cell phones and electronics.  Personal cell phones or electronic devices that are inappropriately used during the school day will be taken from the student and kept safe in the Edgemont School office.  Parents will be responsible for coming to Edgemont to pick up the device.

DRESS CODE:
Wearing appropriate clothing to school is important for quality learning.  The following are some guidelines:

  • Shoes must be worn at all times.
  • Students may wear shorts that are modest and appropriate.  Tank tops and bare midriffs are inappropriate attire for school.
  • Items with offensive, violent, or drug related pictures or slogans will not be permitted.  Items advertising alcoholic beverages or tobacco products will not be permitted.
  • No hats, bandannas, hoods, or sunglasses inside the school.

EAGLE EXTRA:
Many important papers will be brought home to you by your children throughout the school year.  The Eagle Extra, our school newsletter, will be sent home on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month.  Teachers will also communicate through the use of folders, notebooks, etc. Please pay close attention to school communication.

EMERGENCY NUMBERS OR ADDRESS CHANGES
:
Please notify the school office as soon as possible of any changes to the address or phone numbers for you, your work, or your child’s emergency contacts.  This will assure us being able to contact the right person should there be an emergency concerning your child.

HOMEWORK:

Our district policy suggests maximum times for children to be doing homework.  Kindergartners and first graders should be doing 15-20 minutes per night, 2nd and 3rd graders up to 20-30 minutes per night, 4th and 5th graders up to 40 minutes per night, and 6th graders up to 40-60 minutes per night.  Students and their families may want to work more than that.  If your child is spending too much time on homework, please consult the teacher.

ILLNESS:

We encourage children to be in school as much as possible in order to maximize learning.  When illnesses do occur, please call the school (525-7618) or e-mail us at Edgemont@d91.k12.id.us before 9:15 a.m. to notify us that your child will be staying home.  When the child returns to school, please send a note to the teacher.  Students will receive a medically-excused absence when a doctor’s note is submitted to the office staff.

INCLEMENT WEATHER:

According to District policy, students will remain indoors when the temperature is zero degrees wind chill.  There will be times when the temperature is marginally in that range, and we may use an abbreviated schedule at lunch because the length of time students are outdoors is also a factor.  This policy also pertains to before school times.  If a student has been seriously ill and needs to remain indoors during recess, please send a note to school.  A student will need a doctor’s note to be excused from recess for more than three days.

LIBRARY POLICY

The library is closed on Mondays.  It is open 9:00 to 2:30 on Tuesdays – Thursdays and 9:00 – 2:15 on Fridays.  Kindergarten may check out one Easy Paperback book, 1st and 2nd grades may check out one book and 3rd – 6th grades may check out two books.  Books may be checked out for one week.  If a book is late there will be a three day grace period before fins start accruing.  The fines are $.05 a day per book.  You may also bring in a can of food to pay fines up to $1.00 – this does not apply for lost books.  A student may not check out a book if they have any overdue books, lost books, or fines of $1.00 or more.  These things must be taken care of before check out privileges will be reinstated.

LUNCH 2015-2016:
Hot lunches are $2.30 for students and milk is included in this price.  Milk only is 40¢.  Adult lunches are $3.65 a day.  Please send checks made out to “School District 91 Hot Lunch” on a weekly or monthly basis.  Please enclose the correct amount of money for the lunches ordered as this year no change will be given to the children as per district policy.

You may also pay for lunches on-line through our school district website at:
www.ifschools.org .
Please do not combine lunch money with money for other activities in the school as Mrs. Cecil will not be able to cash the checks and make distributions.  Put your check in a sealed envelope labeled with your child’s name, teacher, and the amount of money enclosed.
Students are welcome to go home for lunch, if desired.  Students not going home or with a parent must remain on campus during lunch.  If students leave the campus during lunch time for reasons other than going to their home, they need to check out at the office.  A student’s parents must write a permission note if he/she will be leaving with someone other than a parent.
Parents are always welcome have lunch at school with their Edgemont student.  Please call the office before 9:15 to order lunches or send a note with your child.

Free and reduced price lunch applications are available in the parent information board next to the office at any time during the year.
Those students who are servers in the lunchroom will receive free lunch for their services.  The lunch earned must be eaten the day of the student’s service.  Their hot lunch will be ordered in the usual manner with the rest of the students first thing in the morning.

MEDICINE AT SCHOOL:

If medication of any kind must be given at school, you will need to have the physician complete the form, “Physician’s and Parent’s Request for the Administration of Medication During School Hours by School Personnel” and submit the form to the office.  The medication must be brought to school in its original pharmaceutical container labeled with the student’s name.  Antibiotics should be administered at home whenever possible.
Medication must be delivered to the school by a parent or guardian.
Do not send any medicine in your child’s lunch box or back pack.  No medication will be given without a written order from the doctor, including aspirin, Tylenol, cough syrup, etc.

PARTIES FOR TEACHERS:

The Edgemont staff has adopted the policy of not having students plan and carry out parties for teachers.  If a student wants to recognize a teacher, one suggestion would be for the student to make a card.

PHONE USE AT SCHOOL

School phones are for official school business.  Students will not be allowed to use them to make arrangements for after school play times.  Those arrangements should be made before coming or after getting home from school.  Please communicate after school plans and transportation with your children before they leave for school in the morning.  In cases where it is necessary for you to get a message to your child, please call the office and the message will be forwarded to your child at the earliest convenience.  Only emergency phone calls will be forwarded to teachers during class time so as not to disrupt the education of the other students.

PLAYGROUND EXPECTATIONS:
Be Safe:  Stay on school grounds, keep hands and feet to self, report bullying
Be Respectful:  Include everyone, use only kind words, share and take turns
Be Responsible:  Return borrowed equipment, Pick up after yourself and others

PTO
Edgemont has a very active Parent Teacher Organization; we welcome and encourage participation from all of our parents.  The PTO will send home information soon after school starts.  PTO party fees will be requested at that time.  Additional PTO information can be found at their website edgemontpto.com.  Should you have PTO questions, please feel free to email edgemontpto@gmail.com.  See the Edgemont School calendar at edgemonteagles.com for more information regarding PTO meetings and events.

READING:

Reading at home, individually or with someone, is strongly encouraged.  Students should find the time that works best for them and establish the habit of reading consistently.  In general, 30-60 minutes of sustained reading time can greatly enhance all academic learning.

SCHOOL CLOSURE:

The superintendent will determine snow closures.  This information will be announced on the morning radio and TV stations.   Please do not call the school.

SKATEBOARDS AND ROLLERBLADES:
Skateboards and rollerblades are a safety concern and are not allowed at school.  This includes shoes with rollers on them.

STUDENT PICK UP AND DROP OFF:

Students may walk, ride the bus where assigned, ride bicycles, or have parents drive them to school.  Bicycle racks are located near the playground.  Bicycle locks should be used by students riding their bikes to school.

The drop off area and pick up area for students who ride to and from school with parents or daycare is located in the parking lot to the west of the Edgemont School building.  Parents are responsible to notify their day care of this policy.  Please do not drop off or pick up in the bus lane in front of the school.
Students who misbehave while riding the bus will be issued a citation by the bus driver.  Chronic or severe discipline problems while riding the bus will result in a loss of privilege to ride the bus for a specified time.

TREATS:

Homemade treats are not allowed by directive from the District 7 Health Department.  Commercially purchased items can be handed out to the class, but teachers prefer this to be done at the end of the school day.  In an effort to alleviate hurt feelings, please do not send birthday party invitations to school for distribution.

VISITORS:
Parents and other adults are always welcome to visit our school.  Please stop in the office and obtain a visitor’s pass before visiting other areas in the building.   Students from other schools and young people who are not enrolled in our school are not allowed to visit their friends or attend school.
